Welcome to the Elm Class page!
This term’s topic is all about Transitions and Change and we will be exploring our learning around
20th century music.
In English we will be focused on the fundamentals of writing, remembering how to build our sentences correctly, using punctuation and our beautiful handwriting. We will be using colourful semantics to look at building sentences.
In maths, our Year 1 children are focusing on place value to 100, telling the time to the o’clock and half past and working with money. Our Year 2 children are focusing on telling the time to quarter past and quarter to, as well as how time can be used in day to day life.
In Science, we will be learning about habitats. We will think about how different habitats are the same and how they are different and what conditions might affect habitats.
In History, we will be learning all about castles. We are looking at why castles were build and what life was like inside them. We are even going to Warwick castle in June so we can see a castle in real life.
We love reading at Robert Bakewell, so please try to read as much as possible with your child at home, we cannot wait to hear all about their exciting reads! Remember to log all of their amazing reading on Boomreader so they can get their reading prizes.

Our P.E lessons take place on a Tuesday and a Friday. Please ensure your child comes into school in their P.E kit on those days each week. Also, please ensure your child has a water bottle in school everyday.

Hello! This is my second year at Robert Bakewell and am loving teaching here. I love working with the children, getting to experience their growth first hand. It is such a privilege to watch them grow into the kind, brilliant people they are.
I love all subjects, but I have a soft spot for Geography and RE. I love getting outside the classroom, using our outside spaces to explore and experience the world fist hand. It’s fantastic then when the children ask me questions that I don’t know the answer to. It means we can learn new things together.
At home, I live with my wife and out three guinea pigs - Teddy, Dotty and Lupin. I love to read, bake and have a new found artistic talent. I love to paint, draw and sculpt things I find in nature.

Year 1 phonics screening support
Phonics Screening Check – Week Commencing 9th June
In Year 1, children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check in June. The Phonics Screening Check is a statutory assessment designed to provide teachers and parents with information about how your child is progressing in phonics.
The Phonics Screening Check consists of 40 words for your child to read aloud. Twenty of these are real words and twenty are ‘alien’ (nonsense) words, which are used to assess your child’s ability to apply their phonics knowledge independently. Children who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 will have the opportunity to retake the check in Year 2.
Parents will be informed of their child’s outcome by the end of the school year.
Your child will complete the check with a teacher they know in a calm, friendly, and supportive environment. There is no need for the children to worry, as plenty of praise, encouragement, stickers, Dojos, and time are given to help them feel confident and to show off how brilliant they are at phonics.
