Art at Robert Bakewell
Art
We believe that art provides every child with the opportunity to express their creativity, individuality and imagination. Through a wide range of artistic experiences, pupils develop confidence, practical skills and an appreciation of art and design from different cultures, times and traditions.
Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and is delivered through a carefully planned two-year rolling programme. We use the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme to provide a progressive sequence of learning that develops children's artistic knowledge, techniques and creativity year on year.
The curriculum is organised around four key strands:
· Drawing
· Painting and Mixed Media
· Sculpture and 3D
· Craft and Design
These strands are revisited throughout each key stage, allowing children to build upon prior learning and refine their artistic skills over time.
Developing Creative Artists
Children explore a range of media, materials and techniques while learning about influential artists, designers and art movements. They are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop their own ideas, recognising that there is often more than one successful outcome in art.
Creativity and personal expression are at the heart of our curriculum. Rather than producing identical pieces of work, pupils are supported to make independent artistic choices so that every final outcome is meaningful, individual and reflects their own ideas.
Celebrating Creativity
We are proud to celebrate children's artwork throughout the school, providing opportunities for pupils to display, discuss and reflect on their creations. By evaluating both their own work and that of others, children develop confidence, resilience and an appreciation of different artistic styles and perspectives.
Art in the Early Years
Creativity begins in the Early Years, where children explore colour, texture, pattern and form through play and first-hand experiences. These opportunities support the development of imagination, fine motor skills and self-expression, providing strong foundations for future learning in art and contributing towards the Early Learning Goals in Expressive Arts and Design.
National Gallery: Take One Picture
Each year, the whole school takes part in the National Gallery's Take One Picture project. Inspired by a single work of art from the National Gallery's collection, children explore themes across the curriculum before creating their own unique artistic responses. This collaborative project encourages creativity, critical thinking and a deeper appreciation of how one piece of artwork can inspire a wide range of ideas and interpretations.
Our aim is for every child to leave Robert Bakewell with the confidence to express themselves creatively, the skills to work with a range of artistic media and an appreciation of the important role art plays in our lives and cultures.
