Science at Robert Bakewell

Science

At Robert Bakewell, we believe science inspires children to make sense of the world around them. Through exciting, practical learning and purposeful enquiry, we develop curious, resilient learners who ask questions, investigate ideas and enjoy discovering how the world works.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and is delivered through a carefully planned two-year rolling programme, ensuring progression in both scientific knowledge and Working Scientifically skills.

Science is taught weekly, providing children with regular opportunities to explore, investigate and apply their learning through practical experiences.

Working Scientifically

Practical enquiry is at the heart of our science curriculum. Children progressively develop the skills to:

·         Ask scientific questions.

·         Plan and carry out investigations.

·         Observe, measure and record accurately.

·         Analyse evidence and identify patterns.

·         Draw conclusions and evaluate their findings.

·         Communicate ideas using scientific vocabulary.

These skills are revisited and built upon throughout each year, helping children become confident and independent scientists.

Primary Science Quality Mark

In 2025, Robert Bakewell was awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM), a nationally recognised award that celebrates excellence in science leadership, teaching and learning.

Achieving the PSQM demonstrates our commitment to providing a high-quality science education where children are encouraged to be curious, think critically and develop a strong understanding of the world through practical enquiry. The award recognises our whole-school approach to making science engaging, inclusive and inspiring for every child.

Science in the Early Years

In EYFS, children develop their scientific understanding through play, exploration and first-hand experiences. They observe the natural world, notice seasonal changes and are encouraged to ask questions and make observations, supported by skilled adult interactions.

Supporting Every Learner

Learning is adapted to meet the needs of all pupils while maintaining high expectations. Practical activities, visual resources and appropriate scaffolding ensure every child, including those with SEND, can access the curriculum and succeed.

Our aim is for every child to leave Robert Bakewell as a curious, knowledgeable and confident scientist, equipped with the skills to investigate, question and understand the world around them.
