Religious Education at Robert Bakewell
Religious Education
At Robert Bakewell, we believe that Religious Education helps children develop curiosity, respect and an understanding of the diverse beliefs, values and worldviews that shape our society. Through the study of different religions and non-religious worldviews, we encourage children to develop tolerance, acceptance and an open-minded appreciation of the ways people live their lives.
Our curriculum follows the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus and is delivered through a carefully planned two-year rolling programme. Lessons build knowledge progressively, enabling children to explore a range of religions and worldviews while making meaningful connections between belief, identity, values and everyday life.
Learning Through Enquiry
Our RE curriculum encourages children to ask thoughtful questions, investigate different beliefs and consider the impact religion and worldviews have on individuals, communities and society.
Children learn to:
Develop knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews.
Explore beliefs, traditions, festivals and places of worship.
Ask thoughtful questions and think critically.
Reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
Respect different opinions and celebrate diversity.
Understand how tolerance, acceptance and mutual respect help create inclusive communities.
Through discussion, enquiry and a wide range of high-quality resources, children learn to appreciate different beliefs and traditions while recognising the impact that misunderstanding or prejudice can have on others. They are encouraged to share and celebrate their own experiences and learn from those of others, preparing them to become compassionate and respectful members of society.
Planning
Our RE curriculum follows the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus and is delivered through weekly lessons as part of our carefully planned two-year rolling programme. Lessons are thoughtfully sequenced to build knowledge and understanding progressively across each key stage.
Teachers use a flexible five-part lesson structure, adapting learning and providing appropriate scaffolding where needed to ensure all children can access the curriculum and achieve success.
Religious Education in the Early Years
In the Early Years, Religious Education is woven throughout the curriculum and supports children's development across several areas of learning, including Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, and Understanding the World. Through stories, discussion, celebrations and creative activities, children begin to explore different beliefs, cultures and traditions. These experiences help them develop curiosity, respect for others and an understanding of the diverse communities in which they live, laying strong foundations for future learning in Religious Education.
Supporting Every Learner
Religious Education lessons are carefully adapted to ensure all pupils can access and succeed in the curriculum. Learning is broken down into small, manageable steps, with tasks scaffolded to reduce cognitive load where appropriate. Teachers use a range of strategies, including Widgit symbols, visual resources, discussion prompts and adapted activities, to support children with SEND and those with additional learning needs. This inclusive approach enables every child to engage confidently with Religious Education and develop a respectful understanding of different religions and worldviews.
Our aim is for every child to leave Robert Bakewell Primary School with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to engage thoughtfully with different religions, cultures and worldviews, becoming compassionate, open-minded and responsible citizens in modern Britain.
