French

We believe that learning French is an important part of a broad and balanced curriculum. It helps children develop an understanding of other cultures, broaden their view of the world and gain the ability to communicate with others in a different language. Through French, children begin to see language learning as a bridge to other countries, cultures and communities, helping them develop respect, curiosity and appreciation for diversity.

We use the Language Angels scheme of work across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to ensure a progressive and well-sequenced curriculum. Objectives are carefully planned across year groups to build knowledge, confidence and fluency over time, with regular opportunities for both spoken and written French.

Developing Language Learners

Our French curriculum aims for children to:

• Develop confidence in speaking, reading and writing French.

• Participate in short conversations using familiar language structures.

• Understand the importance of learning another language.

• Explore and appreciate different cultures.

• Develop curiosity and enthusiasm for language learning.

• Build a strong foundation for future language study.

Children are encouraged to actively participate in lessons through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. They regularly practise spoken French through songs, repetition, role-play and conversation, helping them develop confidence and enjoyment in language learning.

Planning

French is taught using the Language Angels progressive scheme, which ensures clear coverage and progression across all year groups. Lessons provide regular exposure to both spoken and written French, with opportunities for children to read, write and communicate in meaningful contexts. Vocabulary and grammar are revisited frequently to support long-term retention and fluency.

Supporting Every Learner

Lessons are carefully adapted to ensure all pupils can access and succeed in French. Through quality first teaching, learning is broken down into small, manageable steps to reduce cognitive load where needed. Teachers use dual-coded vocabulary, visual supports, pre-teaching, scaffolding and adult support to ensure every child can participate confidently. A strong emphasis is placed on spoken language, with practical, interactive activities supporting engagement and understanding. Where appropriate, pupils are given opportunities to record their learning in a variety of ways, ensuring that all children can demonstrate their understanding effectively.

Our aim is for every child to leave Robert Bakewell with a curiosity and enthusiasm for languages, a secure foundation in French and an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life.
