Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
At Robert Bakewell, we believe that Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) prepares children for life beyond the classroom. Our curriculum promotes wellbeing, personal development and positive relationships, equipping pupils with the knowledge, skills and values they need to make informed decisions, stay safe and look after their physical and emotional health.
Through high-quality RSHE, children develop an understanding of the differences between people and learn the importance of tolerance, respect and acceptance. We provide pupils with practical strategies to help them navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience, while encouraging them to become active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities. Our aim is for every child to develop a positive attitude towards RSHE, recognising that the knowledge and life skills they gain will support them throughout their lives.
Our curriculum is based on the statutory guidance for Relationships Education and Health Education and is delivered through the Coram Life Education SCARF programme as part of our carefully planned two-year rolling curriculum. Weekly lessons build progressively across the school, developing children's understanding of relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and living in the wider world.
Developing Responsible Citizens
Through our RSHE curriculum, children learn to:
· Build positive, respectful relationships.
· Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy.
· Recognise and manage their emotions.
· Stay safe, including online.
· Develop resilience, confidence and independence.
· Make informed and responsible decisions.
· Understand and celebrate differences between people.
· Show tolerance, empathy and acceptance of others.
· Contribute positively to school, their community and wider society.
British Values are woven throughout our curriculum, helping children understand democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect and the rule of law. Pupils learn to value diversity, celebrate differences and understand their role as responsible citizens in modern Britain.
Our school values and Character Muscles are embedded throughout every RSHE lesson. Children are encouraged to reflect on qualities such as resilience, respect, responsibility, kindness and reflection, helping them build positive relationships and make thoughtful choices in all aspects of school life.
Planning
We follow the Coram Life Education SCARF scheme, which is delivered through weekly lessons by class teachers. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build knowledge progressively and are adapted and scaffolded where necessary to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring every child can access the curriculum and succeed.
RSHE in the Early Years
RSHE begins in the Early Years through everyday experiences, play and carefully planned activities. Learning links closely to the Early Learning Goals for Self-Regulation, Managing Self and Building Relationships. Children learn to recognise and manage their feelings, develop confidence and independence, build positive relationships and work cooperatively with others. These early experiences provide strong foundations for future learning and help children begin to understand themselves and the world around them.
Supporting Every Learner
Lessons are carefully adapted to meet the needs of all pupils. Teachers use age-appropriate resources, visual supports, discussion and appropriate scaffolding to ensure every child can participate confidently and develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to make safe, healthy and informed choices.
Our aim is for every child to leave Robert Bakewell with the confidence, resilience and understanding to build positive relationships, embrace diversity, make informed decisions and become healthy, respectful and responsible members of society.
