ELSA – Emotional Literacy Support Assistant
At Robert Bakewell Primary School, we understand that children need to feel happy, safe and confident in order to learn and thrive. That is why we offer ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) support to help children develop the emotional skills they need to manage feelings, build positive relationships and cope with life’s challenges.
What is ELSA?
ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. ELSAs are specially trained members of school staff who support children with their emotional wellbeing.
ELSA sessions provide children with a safe, welcoming and supportive space where they can talk about their feelings, explore different emotions and learn practical strategies to help them manage difficult situations.
The aim is not to provide counselling or therapy, but to help children develop the skills and confidence they need to understand and manage their emotions.
How can ELSA help?
ELSA support can help children to:
Understand and recognise their emotions
Develop confidence and self-esteem
Manage worries and anxiety
Develop resilience and coping strategies
Build positive friendships and relationships
Develop social skills
Manage strong emotions such as anger or frustration
Cope with changes and difficult experiences
Develop independence and problem-solving skills
Feel more confident in school and in their relationships with others
What happens during an ELSA session?
ELSA sessions are tailored to each child's individual needs. Sessions may involve talking, games, stories, creative activities, role play and practical exercises.
Children might explore topics such as feelings, friendships, self-esteem, confidence, relaxation, recognising emotions and managing worries.
Sessions are usually delivered individually or in a small group, depending on the needs of the child.
Most importantly, ELSA sessions provide children with a calm and supportive environment where they can feel listened to, understood and valued.
Who might receive ELSA support?
ELSA support can benefit any child who may need some additional help with their emotional wellbeing or social development.
A child may be offered ELSA support if they are experiencing difficulties such as:
Worries or anxiety
Low confidence or self-esteem
Friendship difficulties
Difficulty managing emotions
Changes at home or school
Bereavement or loss
Difficulty coping with particular situations
ELSA support is usually provided for a short, planned period, with clear goals agreed for the child.
Working together
We recognise that children make the best progress when school and home work together. Where appropriate, we will share strategies with parents and carers so that children can be supported consistently both at school and at home.
